StatesAtlas exists to give readers accurate, well-sourced information about the 50 U.S. states. This page explains how we gather, write, check and update our content.
Our sourcing standards
- Official sources first. We rely on the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, state legislatures, state comptrollers and revenue departments, and similar primary sources.
- Secondary sources with care. When we use research organizations, think tanks or news outlets, we name them and link to the page we used.
- Every figure is linked. Numbers in tables and text point to their source so you can verify them.
How content is created
We use AI tools to help research and draft pages. Every page is built from sources retrieved at the time of writing, and key figures and calculations are checked against those sources before publication. An editor on the StatesAtlas editorial team reviews and approves each page. AI assistance does not replace source checking: if a figure cannot be verified, we leave it out.
Worked examples and estimates
Where we show a worked example (for instance, a sample property tax bill), we label any assumed rates as illustrative so they are not mistaken for official figures.
Calculators
Our calculators use the tax rates, brackets and wage limits published by the IRS, the Social Security Administration and state revenue departments for the year shown on each tool. Each calculator lists what it includes, what it leaves out and the sources of its figures. Results are estimates for planning, not a substitute for your actual pay stub or tax return.
Updates and corrections
Each page shows a “Last updated” date. We review tax and cost data at least once a year and sooner when laws or rates change. If you find an error, tell us. We correct verified mistakes promptly and add a note to the page when a correction is significant.
Independence and advertising
StatesAtlas is supported by advertising. Advertisers do not influence what we write or how we present data, and we do not accept payment for favorable coverage of a state, city or business.
Not professional advice
Our content is general information. It is not legal, tax, financial or real estate advice. Confirm important figures with the relevant government agency or a qualified professional.
